Justin Bieber - U Smile

Opening with JB's now infamous "ohhhh's" and "yeahhhh's," the listener is instantly aware of the ominous content of this track. For those who are anti-Bieber...read no further, as his latest offering could probably come no more covered in teen sugar pop...

On the plus side, 'U Smile' features a catchy, although unoriginal, beat which lends this song best to a summer driving song, extremely mellow but with enough breeze to see you on your way. It's sickly sweet lyrics however, ("...whenever u smile, I smile..." etc) will either enamour or aggravate, and initially it is difficult to differentiate the verses from the chorus.

It is also obvious that Bieber has a moment of clarity in this track though, when stating that "...your lips, my biggest weakness, shouldn't have let you know..." True when you resemble a six year old child. What is confusing is how much energy this song lacks, and therefore makes for a surprising release when considering Justin's other singles and the fact that he has just won the Best New Artist award at the 2010 VMAs.

From around 1.16 to 1.36 the song finds a more interesting tone, stepping up the beat and creating a pleasant interlude which finally helps create a more obvious verse/chorus pattern, although this does little to lift the overall song.

As a whole, this track's effect is to either melt your heart or to turn your stomach and I find it a shame that this isn't as memorable as Bieber's previous smash hits.

6/10 - Ice :(
