KT Tunstall - (Still A) Weirdo
After a two year hiatus, KT Tunstall is back with her new album 'Tiger Suit,' and with that its lead single '(Still A) Weirdo.' It would seem that KT is done with her experimental poppy sound and is returning to a more folk inspired tone, opening the track with her famous guitar and an backing track of "uh-oh's" that initially sounds fun but quickly becomes irritating, (Luckily this fades out as the song continues, but should have just been cut off at the end of the intro anyway...).
Tunstall's vocals are soft and even her more husky edge appears to have vanished on this track, which creates a smooth and welcoming atmosphere, which for this track is perfect although I'm hoping she doesn't keep it up for the entire album as its what makes her stand out.
The chorus to this track is frustrating, reminding you of a song that you can never quite put your finger on, but is melodic and simple all the same. It doesn't really offer a major selling point however and isn't one of KT's usual sing-a-long classics.
The song itself seems almost conservative making it surprising as a lead single, and as the Scot states, "Here I am upon the same spot" which is exactly where this track takes her, the same spot as countless others in her genre. On a positive note however, the lyrics are soothing and more reflective than her other works, looking back on her life as a weirdo and showing that she's comfortable with that self-evaluation, a carefree message that is a relatable idea for a track, as it's easy to assume her fans are like her, "...optimistic but never quite elegant..."
Overall this track comes across to me as a 'summer breeze' tune, a song that is pleasant enough to the ear but that has no real impact and that will almost certainly be forgotten about once the big autumn/winter releases are unleashed. It's hard to rate this song as it's not a bad song but is just nice...and unfortunately nice isn't enough for a good chart position.
6/10 - Not quite nice enough for Spice ;-)
