Cee-Lo Green - Fuck You

Cee-Lo Green, of Gnarls Barkley fame, is another artist who has gone solo and is gearing up to release his next single, in this case the provocatively titled 'Fuck You.' Does Green have the same hooking power as his Gnarls Barkley team and is the title just too much?

Kicking off reasonably slowly, with a deep sounding guitar feature, Cee-Lo goes all out on the expletives, which to be honest isn't surprising given the name of the track, but at the same time is not for the faint of heart. Apart from the overkill on the 'fuck you' lyrics, the man himself sounds very soulful, the main reason he has amassed so many fans. However, many who hear this may easily mistake it for another Gnarls Barkley tune.

From around 40 seconds in, Green drops the slower pace of the song and the whole tempo and feel of the track picks up. There will be a lot of men who share the sentiments of this song, blasting a gold digging girlfriend for ditching him and expressing the feeling of loving but despising her at the same time. Above all a feelgood atmosphere carries through, with Cee-Lo maintaining that he's still good despite the fact the change in his pocket isn't enough for his ex.

The breakdown to the track is less commendable however, with Cee-Lo coming across as more comic, (Although not funny comic...) than cool, which does take from the overall merit of the song. On the plus side, the accompanying video is worth a watch for its humourous set up.

As a whole, Fuck You could be counted as a modern day R'n'B 'I Will Survive' kind of number, as it does have that anthem-like quality to it and, with the right impact, could have swarms of people singing along to it on the radio. A good solo effort, but not quite a 'Fuck You' to that old Gnarls Barkley image.

8/10 - Spice
