Skepta feat. Preeya Kalidas - Cross My Heart
UK rapper Skepta has teamed up with Preeya Kalidas, of 'Shimmy' fame, on the second single from his current album 'Doin' It Again.' He may be crossing his heart in the song, but should we be crossing him off our iPods?
The track starts off with some promise, opening with an almost orchestral sound of violins and heartbeat drums, whilst Skepta introduces himself and 'Miss P' in his ghetto shaped accent. From this, however, it all goes downhill. Preeya launches into the chorus straight away and it's obvious that it doesn't show off any of her vocal capabilities to their full extent, she was a leading lady for Andrew Lloyd-Webber for God's sake!
As for Skepta, he comes across as a typically generic rap artist, with none of the excitement and freshness of his contemporaries such as Tinie Tempah, although he does share the same taste for and outdoes him on cheesy lyrics, stating that "...even Walkers ain't got this much flavour..." Sigh...
A quick look at the video below will confirm all you need to know about Skepta, the use of pimp-like imagery and flash cars show the kind of successful rap artist he aspires to be, we're thinking Snoop Dogg etc, when really he's not even anywhere near the same calibre. He needs the constant images of half dressed women and Kalidas writhing around to keep interest.
As we draw back to the chorus, it's hard to find an obvious hook, and it's long forgotten before Preeya finishes chirping it out. In essence, it really adds nothing to an already dismal track and whilst she hasn't necessarily had the MOST successful solo career to date, Preeya should be looking for better collabs than this.
There may well be some kind of niche for this, most probably amongst inner-city hip-hop wannabes, who will love the irritating and over repetitive backing track. Although we concede that the track does pick up a little from around 2:11, it's too late to save the overall song. Don't expect to see this attacking the top 10 any time soon...
