Travie McCoy is about to drop the second single from his debut solo album 'Lazarus,' the refreshing pop-come-hip-hop song 'We'll Be Alright.' Travie has sampled Supergrass' 'Alright' in the track, which, given the title, may not come as a surprise to you all...
This track shows that McCoy can have a riot without the billions, and without Bruno Mars for that matter, whom many have credited for 'Billionaire' finding so much chart success. This time, McCoy isn't so heavy on the rap front, and the track is altogether a lot softer for it. Travie does, of course, inject it with an element of hip-hop but it's probably the closest we'll get to him actually singing on a track as opposed to his 'Billionaire' style.
The song is however, extremely similar to the original, albeit with Travie's interjections, which, whilst making it almost too easy to sing along to, we find makes it hard to give McCoy full credit for the appeal of the track. Although it still has that fresh, exciting vibe to it, some will find it a case of 'we've heard it all before' as large chunks are pretty much lifted from the original, so perhaps some more creativity wouldn't have gone amiss.
Furthermore, this would perhaps have worked better as a summer single, rather than an October release, due to its fun loving, carefree nature. It reminds us of long, warm summer days running around with friends, splashing in pools, having barbecues and driving with the top down, if only we had that kind of car...As it is, the single's release date is due for when the weather's grey, the jumpers are pulled out of their summer hibernation, the heating comes on and the rain kicks in. The only time this song could have any relevance that we can picture in our mind's eye is on a crisp Autumnal day, playing in the dry, crackly leaves. Basically...the timing's all out for this track, which is a huge shame.
We don't feel this has the same magic as 'Billionaire' and as such probably won't enjoy the same chart success. However, we do love the track, despite its shortcomings and it definitely deserves a few plays on the iPod.
7/10 - We'll Be Alright (If we had some more Spice)
