Paramore - All I Wanted

Hayley Williams is back to her roots after her recent 'Airplanes' collaboration with B.O.B. to release Paramore's next single 'All I Wanted,' a mournful rock stormer that's a far cry from Williams' last work.

Strumming their way into a melodic opening, Paramore could appear to have taken a more calm approach to this number, however don't hold this idea for long. Once Hayley Williams' smooth vocals draw you into the story with some sad, self-pitying lyrics questioning how things could be different, the chorus leaps into action.

With Williams screaming the 'All I wanted was you' hook amidst a storm of raging guitars it's impossible to ignore the pain and frustration embedded in this track, a trick Paramore have perfected over the years.

It becomes clear that the verses represent almost an internal monologue as the song progresses, and Williams' strained emotions are laid bare by the track. Unfortunately this song is far too short and it seems that all too soon the chorus is back which does begin to feel a little tedious after hearing "All I wanted was you" bellowed four times in a row, but on the flip side, does act as a good re-enforcement of the heartbreak of the song.

'All I Wanted' acts as a track discussing the joys of hindsight, or more likely in this case the frustrations that it can bring or perhaps this track is representative of Williams' frustrations at not actually meeting B.o.B. throughout the recording of both the vocals and video of 'Airplanes'... Either way, Williams once again provides some killer vocals which more than match the backing guitars and show that Paramore can still turn in a solid performance.

7/10 - Spice(y)
