Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

If you drop by the movies and decide to catch this film, then be prepared to suspend your version of reality at the door as you step into Scott Pilgrim's weird and wonderful world where life, quite literally, is a game.

The story follows the aforementioned Scott Pilgrim, a 23 year old slacker from Toronto who falls for the new girl all the boys want, Ramona Flowers. Dumping his current girlfriend for Ramona, Pilgrim has no clue that this would be the least of the obstacles preventing the pair from dating when it emerges that Scott must defeat 7 of Ramona's 'evil exes' before their relationship can flourish.

Originating from a series of 6 graphic novels, this is a perfect blend of comic book and computer game effects which although a little offputting at first, soon feels comfortable and really add to the appeal of the film. Not only will they please comic book geeks but also add tremendously to the humourous aspect of the movie.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World features plenty of dramatic action scenes, tinged with comedy most likely due to its Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead director, Edgar Wright. On top of this lies an underlying love story along with a lovable protagonist, a role now perfected by Michael Cera, and zaney villains.

One issue I did find is that there is never really a clear reason as to why Scott Pilgrim is so sure that Ramona is 'The One,' although perhaps it is simply a case of the geek loving the cool kid. Either way, it's easily forgiveable and is probably for the best to overlook it for the greater good of the movie.

Overall Scott Pilgrim vs. The World features some classic lines as well as comic characters such as Scott's nosey teen sister, his gay room-mate Wallace and the miserable foul mouthed ex of Scott's friend. This is a cleverly constructed work that should leave all audiences with a smile on their face.

4/5 - SPICE :-)
