A work in progress

Welcome to The Ice, Spice and Vice Files!

Here we aim to provide you with 7 full length and detailed reviews, one for each day of the week, of the highlights (or lowlights as the case may be) of the following week's single releases.

You will also find plenty of other features, including the UK midweeks singles chart which is updated daily, roundups of both the international music and boxoffice charts, a glance at the X Factor UK, a 'Who's On Top?' magazine section as well as some other treats too, such as our 'Star Power' featured artist page and 'Introducing...' page.

As always, if there's something you want us to review or feature, just let us know via email or comment and we'll try and sort something out. We're very friendly like that ;-)

Selena Gomez & The Scene - Round & Round

This is the lead single dropped from the somewhat pretentiously named Selena Gomez & The Scene's latest album, 'A Year Without Rain' and serves as their second official UK release after the #7 chart entry 'Naturally' in 2009. Although this offering is more or less the same kind of sound as their last single, I'm unsure of its chart potential.

'The Scene' deliver a reasonably heavy guitar based backing on this track, which do surprisingly match Gomez's young and sweet vocals which, after the loved up affair of 'Naturally' have turned all angsty and frustrated. Whilst Gomez attempts to deliver the lines about how her love life feels like it's going round in circles with a more adult tone, it isn't entirely convincing given her sugared voice, and is more realistic in representing a teenage crush.

The track itself lacks a lot of depth, but is a reasonably good candy-coated pop number and does feature a simple but attractive hook of "...round and round..." although this isn't nearly as good as their infectious 2009 release. The average teen-aimed lyrics such as "...you're gonna miss me, 'coz I'm getting dizzy, going round and round..." will no doubt appeal to that market but will grow tiresome upon the ears of the rest of us.

Without a doubt, the best feature on this single is Selena's demanding breakdown, which does come across as being more mature and seductive, and may well be the most memorable couple of lines of the whole track. This perhaps is a glimpse of what is to come from the tiny songstress as her sound develops and if so should be worth a listen once she's shaken of the Disney hold on her a little more.

In general there's not much creativity behind the track, although it's not going to offend the majority of the fan base it's after. However, whether or not this track will be spinning round and round on many iPods for long remains to be seen...perhaps until the next Miley track is released...

7/10 - Spicey...Spicey...Spicey...Spicey...Spicey...(Sorry, got carried away by the chorus...)
